Located in historic downtown Big Timber, Montana, Two Rivers Gallery is a non-profit, volunteer-run space dedicated to showcasing original work by regional artists. Guided by gallery director Mary Grace, the gallery offers visitors an opportunity to experience artwork shaped by the landscapes, histories, and unique voices of the West, and how this community-centered gallery supports artists and art in Yellowstone Country.

“When you step into Two Rivers Gallery, you’re entering a space that reflects Big Timber’s creative spirit. Not far from the Boulder and Yellowstone Rivers that give us our name, the gallery feels open and calm, with natural light, warm wood floors, and artwork that invites a closer look, pieces shaped by Montana’s landscapes and history.

Many of the artists featured here explore Montana’s landscapes and communities in deeply personal ways. Painters like C. David Swanson capture the changing West with evocative realism, portraying abandoned railroad hotels, grain elevators, and ranch buildings that echo with history while D. Rivers brings a more expressive approach, layering wildlife and rural prairie scenes with a sense of serenity. You’ll also find work by Robert Spannring, whose decades-long career as a watercolorist and illustrator has produced stunning western scenes, amongst others, capturing Yellowstone and Montana landscapes in oils, illustrations, and mixed mediums.

You’ll find artists working across a wide range of materials and ideas. Barbara Van Cleve’s photography focuses on horses and Western culture, while Shirley Wempner, who has been involved with the gallery for many years, brings bold brush strokes, vivid colors, and a love of the outdoors to capture wildlife, ranch scenes, and landscapes that invite the viewer into the moment. Thomas English, also a longtime gallery contributor, combines outdoor and studio painting, drawing inspiration from the California and American Impressionists to create richly textured, interpretations of the West.

What makes Two Rivers Gallery special is that it’s always changing, yet deeply grounded in Montana. We highlight artists through rotating exhibitions, smaller original works, and community-centered events that encourage people to slow down and really engage with the art. We also support hands-on learning through classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults, keeping creativity accessible and alive in Big Timber.
