Tinworks is an artist-centered, community-oriented non-profit arts space that transformed a collection of historic buildings and open fields into places for creativity and connection. Under director Jenny Moore’s leadership, Tinworks offers free exhibitions, programs, and performances that invite everyone to experience art in unexpected ways.

“Tinworks began in 2019 as a pop-up art space in Bozeman’s northeast neighborhood, an industrial turned artistic district framed by the Bridger Mountain Range. The former tin manufacturing warehouse hosts large-scale exhibitions, while a one-acre outdoor field offers space for artist-led installations and performances.

The site itself tells a story. Once slated for development, the two-acres were instead offered to Tinworks in perpetuity as the artists and their work took root. Today the site includes the former sheet metal manufacturing warehouse devoted to seasonal exhibitions, a former pig barn repurposed to host family programs and educational workshops, and a historic grain storage building that offers year-round exhibitions. Even the open greenspace is devoted to art, from ecological installations that activate the land to outdoor performances.

For Tinworks, artists and community are at the heart of everything we do. Admission is free because art should be accessible, without barriers. Our gallery attendants are often artists themselves, trained to guide visitors, answer questions, and enhance the viewing experience. Our visitors are welcome to explore and engage, not just observe. From our public green spaces where the community harvested wheat as part of Agnes Denes’ ecological artwork, to hands-on clay studios, and drop-in workshops, every corner of Tinworks invites participation.

We’re rooted in Montana, but the art we show, the stories it tells, and the ideas we share reach much farther. Exhibitions bring together local and international artists who challenge us to think differently, to connect with the land, and to engage with each other. Whether it’s reimagining ceramic traditions in “A Kin to Clay” exhibition, or experiencing Layli Long Soldier’s long-term installation, “I don’t trust nobody but the land,” visitors are encouraged to explore, reflect, and even make art.

Tinworks is a place where art belongs to everyone, where history, place, and creativity coexist, and where visitors, whether lifelong art enthusiasts or someone just passing through Bozeman, can feel welcome, inspired, and part of something much bigger than themselves.
