Breanna Ferreira is a resident artist at the Red Lodge Clay Center, a destination tucked beneath the Beartooth Mountains where artists from across the country come to live, work, and learn through clay. As part of this community, Breanna helps carry the Clay Center’s mission of supporting artists, nurturing the creative process, and connecting people to handmade work in meaningful, everyday ways.

“Red Lodge may be a small Montana town of just over 2,300 people, but it’s also home to one of the most vibrant ceramic communities in the country. For nearly twenty years, the Red Lodge Clay Center has grown into a national hub for ceramic artists, drawing artists, educators, and enthusiasts to this unlikely creative outpost in the Rockies.

Our mission is simple: support artists, champion the creative process, and make art part of everyday life. We do that through residencies, exhibitions, and hands-on education, and what still amazes me is how many people travel thousands of miles just to be a part of it.

Our campus is woven through Red Lodge itself. Downtown, our gallery and community classroom sit right on Main Street. A few blocks away, our resident artists live in historic neighborhood houses. Five miles north, in a 10,000-square-foot industrial studio, residents and staff work side by side, firing kilns, developing new ideas, and pushing their craft forward.

Education is at the core of what we do. We offer community classes for adults and kids, outreach to rural schools, summer camps, workshops, lectures, and free public demonstrations with nationally acclaimed ceramic artists.

We represent around 120 artists in our gallery to curate eight rotating shows a year, along with a biennial juried national that brings in emerging and established voices from coast to coast.

But the heartbeat of Red Lodge Clay Center is our residency program. Each year, artists apply from all over the United States for the chance to live and work here, trading their time and skills for studio space, housing, materials, and the chance to immerse themselves in a focused, supportive community. Some stay a few weeks. Some stay two years. All of them transformed.

At the end of the day, it’s about recognizing the value of art in everyday life. A special mug, a favorite bowl, a plate that feels just right in your hands, these handmade pieces connect us to something real.
